Project: Troop Dogs, a non-profit organization founded by Susan Engel of Southampton, was inspired by a surplus of Halloween candy. The organization’s mission is to provide comfort items to military dogs and their handlers stationed in combat zones in the Middle East. What started as a simple act of kindness has blossomed into a significant support system for these loyal canine companions.
The idea took shape in 2009 when a group from a Weight Watchers meeting sought to donate excess Halloween candy to troops overseas. Engel, being a dog trainer, saw an opportunity to extend that generosity to military working dogs (MWDs) serving abroad. With the guidance of Ron Aiello, president of The War Dog Association, Project: Troop Dogs came into being, aiming to uplift both the canine warriors and their human counterparts.
Military Working Dogs, or war dogs, have a long history of service dating back to the aftermath of Pearl Harbor. Initially used as sentry dogs, their roles have evolved over the years to include specialized tasks like explosive detection. Today, these highly trained dogs play a crucial role in military operations, often saving lives and preventing casualties through their keen senses and unwavering dedication.
The support provided by Project: Troop Dogs extends beyond mere gestures of goodwill. Care packages containing essential items like Doggles, protective eyewear for dogs, and dog boots are sent to address the specific needs of MWDs deployed in challenging environments like the deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan. These items not only protect the dogs from harsh conditions but also ensure their overall well-being.
Engel’s initiative has garnered widespread support, with contributions pouring in from various individuals and organizations. Southampton School No. 2, for instance, actively participates in fundraising efforts to aid Project: Troop Dogs. Riggs, Engel’s Belgian Malinois, plays a dual role as a demonstration dog for the project and a therapy dog, embodying the spirit of service and compassion that defines this noble cause.
Through the unwavering dedication of volunteers, known as “Troop Dog Angels,” over 850 care packages have been distributed to date, enriching the lives of both military dogs and their handlers. The impact of these efforts reverberates across continents, bridging the gap between home and the frontlines for these courageous canines and their human companions.
As the legacy of Project: Troop Dogs continues to grow, Engel remains committed to supporting these unsung heroes of the military. The organization’s outreach efforts serve as a reminder of the profound bond between humans and animals, transcending borders and embodying the true essence of compassion and solidarity in times of conflict.
