Shatter-proof goggles, ear muffs, and a cooling vest have become essential gear for military dogs on patrol in Afghanistan. Cocker spaniel Bracken is one such pooch, ready to face the dangers of machine gun fire and bomb blasts alongside troops. The Ministry of Defence has introduced a new doggy ‘military kit’ to ensure the safety of these loyal companions.
The kit includes shatter-proof goggles, known as ‘doggles,’ designed to provide UV protection and durability in harsh conditions. Ear muffs molded to fit the dog’s head protect them from loud noises like gunfire. Additionally, a cooling vest matching soldiers’ camouflage helps regulate body temperature. Boots with rubber soles provide traction, while air mesh keeps paws ventilated.
Costing a total of £140, the kit is lightweight and versatile. Bracken, a five-year-old vehicle search dog, will soon be deployed to Afghanistan with his handler, Private Caen Morris. These military dogs are crucial assets, with some trained to detect explosives and weapons, like Bracken.
Staff Sergeant Baxter emphasizes the importance of these dogs, highlighting the trust and responsibility placed in them. Bracken, a member of the 102 Military Working Dogs squadron, underwent six months of training before joining the team in Germany. Their specialized skills contribute significantly to military operations in Afghanistan.
These canine companions play a vital role in military missions, using their keen senses to detect threats and ensure the safety of troops. The new ‘military kit’ not only protects these dogs but also enhances their capabilities in challenging environments.
