Military Working Dogs are essential assets that operate in challenging terrains, often facing the risk of injury during missions. In Kosovo, the Medevac Aviators of Multinational Battle Group – East are prepared to provide medical assistance to these canines if needed.
To maintain proficiency in aiding injured MWDs, Medical Aviators and Military Working Dog Handlers conducted canine hoist training with a UH-60 Medevac helicopter at Camp Bondsteel. This training equips the teams with hoisting capabilities to rescue MWDs from inaccessible areas.
The hoist capabilities of the Medevac Aviators enable them to reach heights of up to 295 feet, ensuring that they can extract MWD teams from various terrains. Whether in mountainous regions or areas lacking landing zones, the Medevac stands ready to hoist out injured or sick MWDs.
During the training, MWDs and their handlers are hoisted using a specialized rescue device, providing a secure means of transport for the canines. This training not only familiarizes the dogs with the aircraft but also instructs the Aviators on safely maneuvering the MWD teams into the helicopter.
Special safety precautions are taken when hoisting a canine into the helicopter, including the use of protective gear such as “Doggles” for eye protection and muzzles to reduce stress. The training emphasizes the importance of ensuring the well-being of the MWDs during hoisting procedures.
Canine hoist training has evolved in recent years through collaboration between MWD Handlers, veterinarians, and Medevac Aviators. This advancement in capability reflects a growing emphasis on ensuring the safety and efficient evacuation of MWDs from challenging environments.
MWDs play a crucial role as force multipliers, capable of operating effectively in diverse environments to support various missions. Their training and deployment align with regulations outlining their roles in garrison and combat support operations, underscoring their value as versatile assets.
As the military continues to enhance its capabilities for supporting MWDs, the collaboration between Medevac Aviators, MWD Handlers, and veterinarians remains pivotal in ensuring the well-being and effectiveness of these dedicated service animals.
