Pictures have been released showcasing military dogs outfitted in new protective gear following a substantial contract awarded by the Ministry of Defence to a Surrey-based firm. The dogs, named Una, Meg, Bonnie, and Grainger, were spotted testing various safety equipment such as goggles, ear defenders, vests, and boots during routine training at St George’s Barracks. This initiative is part of a significant effort to enhance the training of over 500 military working dogs across various branches, including the Army, RAF, and Ministry of Defence Police.
The Ministry of Defence’s Defence, Equipment, and Support (DE&S) arm secured a five-year contract with Von Wolf K9 Sport & Service Dog Equipment Limited, a Surrey-based company, with the potential for a two-year extension. This contract, amounting to approximately £3.1 million over seven years, will focus on developing a comprehensive “canine catalogue” that includes essential training and welfare items for the dogs, such as eye protection, hearing gear, paw boots, cooling vests, and flotation devices.
These military dogs, ranging from German shepherds to Labradors and other selectively bred breeds, serve crucial roles both domestically and internationally. The equipment provided under this contract will not only include protective gear but also everyday items like waste bags, bowls, leads, harnesses, and specialized exercise aids. Additionally, agility equipment will be part of the package to enhance the dogs’ training and performance.
Von Wolf, a family-run business operating for nearly two decades near Gatwick, will see an increase in its workforce with the creation of a new position. The company, which caters to the MoD, police, and HMP, as well as pet products and toys, is set to expand its offerings through this contract. Von Wolf’s shop in Smallfield stocks a range of products and is open on weekdays, serving various clients with their equipment needs.
The Specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Search (EOD&S) team within DE&S was responsible for tendering the Canine Support Solution contract, emphasizing the importance of providing top-notch gear for military working dogs across different services. This initiative not only enhances the safety and well-being of these canine companions but also underscores the crucial role they play in various defense and security operations.
With the MoD’s commitment to investing in the training and welfare of military working dogs, the partnership with Von Wolf signifies a step towards ensuring the highest standards of equipment and care for these loyal and dedicated animals. As these dogs continue to serve on the frontlines alongside their human counterparts, the provision of specialized protective gear and essential items will undoubtedly contribute to their effectiveness and overall well-being.
