A couple in Worcestershire has turned the front room of their historic home into one of Britain’s smallest pubs. Hazel and Andrew Smith spent £50,000 and six months converting the space into a Victorian-style taproom that can accommodate up to 20 people.
The cozy pub, named J Maverick & Co, offers craft ales and ciders from independent breweries. Hazel, who left her job to focus on the business, describes the pub as a place that fosters conversations and community spirit, with only one table for six and a window seat.
The Smiths saw the potential in their new property, a house with historical significance dating back to 1780. Formerly known as Lavender’s House, it was previously used as a residence for tourists. The couple seized the opportunity to fulfill Hazel’s dream of owning a pub and creating a vibrant social space.
The pub features a selection of local brews from Gloucester, Bewdley, Tenbury Wells, and the Wye Valley. They even serve a custom ale named Fiddler’s Dog, created by Bewdley Brewery for a local festival. With six taps, including kegs and casks, and a variety of canned drinks, J Maverick & Co aims to offer a unique and authentic pub experience.
Decorated in the style of an old Victorian pub, the establishment exudes charm and character, setting it apart from more industrial modern pubs. The Smiths have paid attention to every detail, including converting a Victorian bookshelf into a fridge and maintaining a cellar to store beverages at the optimal temperature.
Despite its small size, the pub has garnered a loyal following, attracting locals, tourists, and even the local rugby club. Customers appreciate the intimate atmosphere and quality beverages, with one patron remarking on the pub’s charm and uniqueness.
Andrew Smith, who also operates a courier company, acknowledges that their pub may be one of the smallest in the Midlands or even the country. While there may be contenders for the title, the Smiths’ dedication to creating a welcoming and distinctive pub experience has undoubtedly made J Maverick & Co a standout destination in Upton-upon-Severn.
As the trend of micro-pubs and niche social spaces continues to grow, establishments like J Maverick & Co showcase the enduring appeal of intimate settings that foster community engagement and authentic experiences. The Smiths’ venture serves as a testament to the power of passion and creativity in transforming a simple idea into a thriving business and a beloved local haunt.
