Service Dog Nugget Safely Joins Cornell Lab Research Team

Genesis Contreras, a student at Cornell University, faced a unique challenge when she wanted to gain research experience in a lab. Contreras relies on her service dog, Nugget, to alert her of potential health risks, but bringing a service dog into a lab setting poses safety concerns. Despite this obstacle, Contreras, along with faculty and staff at Cornell, found a solution to ensure Nugget’s safety while working in the lab.

Nugget, a 4-year-old beagle, now accompanies Contreras in the lab, equipped with specialized gear like “doggles,” booties, and a custom lab jacket to ensure his safety. Working in the Cornell Wildlife Health Lab, Contreras studies the threatened eastern hellbender salamander, an experience that has opened new career paths and provided valuable mentorship.

Contreras expressed her surprise at finding fulfillment in lab-based conservation work, contrary to her initial expectations of working directly with animals. Nugget’s presence is crucial in alerting Contreras and others to her well-being, allowing her to take necessary steps to prevent health issues.

According to postdoctoral researcher Alyssa Kaganer, who has volunteered with service dog organizations, understanding Nugget’s signals has been essential in ensuring Contreras’s safety. The inclusive programs at Cornell, aimed at increasing access for underrepresented groups, facilitated Nugget’s integration into the lab environment.

Support for Contreras and Nugget was widespread, with faculty members and program coordinators collaborating to make the lab a safe and inclusive space. Contreras’s experience in the lab not only enhances her research skills but also provides valuable mentorship and a sense of belonging beyond academic pressures.

Contreras emphasized the importance of individualized support for service dog users, highlighting the need for open dialogue and tailored solutions. The community at Cornell, including various departments and peers, has played a significant role in supporting Contreras and Nugget throughout their journey.

Looking ahead, Contreras’s dedication to her research and her bond with Nugget exemplify resilience and determination in overcoming challenges. As Contreras continues her scientific journey, the support and mentorship she receives at Cornell lay a strong foundation for her future success in the field.
