Portarlington’s Newcombe Street is set to be transformed into a vibrant runway as the eighth annual Portarlington AFL Dog Fashion Parade makes a grand return. The event, organized by the dog advocacy group Woofers and Walkers, invites owners to showcase their furry friends dressed in their favorite footy team colors at the Community Information Booth, creating a springtime spectacle that has become a beloved tradition in the local community.
Julie Elterman, a Woofers and Walkers representative and the event’s master of ceremonies, expressed excitement about the community’s involvement in the parade. With approximately 20 dogs participating each year, the event brings together dog lovers, local businesses, and residents to bid farewell to the footy season in style. The parade offers a variety of awards, ensuring that every participant has a chance to shine.
This year’s event sees an increased participation from local traders, with seven businesses actively contributing to the festivities. The camaraderie and enthusiasm surrounding the parade highlight the strong community spirit in Portarlington, making it a must-attend event for both dog enthusiasts and fashion aficionados.
Throughout the day, donations will be collected to support Portarlington’s Food Assist 3223 organization, which uses the proceeds to provide pet food to those in need. The event features a lineup of prizes, including best in parade, judges’ award, stylish senior award, up and comer award, and encouragement award, adding an element of friendly competition to the day’s festivities.
The Portarlington AFL Dog Fashion Parade, dating back to 2015, has become a cherished tradition since its inception coinciding with the Victorian Parliament’s introduction of the long weekend. The event not only showcases the creativity and bond between dogs and their owners but also serves as a heartwarming gathering that brings joy to participants and spectators alike.
The parade, commencing at 11 am with registration starting at 10:30 am, promises a delightful display of canine couture and community spirit. As the town’s streets come alive with wagging tails and colorful ensembles, the Portarlington AFL Dog Fashion Parade stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of celebrating the unique bond between humans and their furry companions.
