Community Unites to Support Service Dogs and Police K-9s

Enfield Hooah, a military support group, and the Enfield Dog Park Action Committee recently came together for a noble cause. For the second consecutive year, they gathered dog treats, toys, and supplies to support service dogs both locally and overseas. This initiative aimed to show appreciation for the invaluable service provided by these loyal canines.

The Enfield Dog Park Action Committee, led by Karen Ward, noted an increase in monetary donations this year, although there were fewer physical donations of treats and toys. Approximately four boxes of various items, including collapsible bowls, doggles (dog goggles), and doggie toothbrushes, were generously contributed by the community.

During the annual Cookies for Camouflage cookie drive in November, donations poured in and were subsequently handed over to Simsbury Animal Control Officer Mark Rudewicz. Rudewicz, a retired Hartford police lieutenant and Marine Corps veteran, has been orchestrating donation drives since 2009. His deep respect for service dogs is evident in his dedication to honoring these four-legged heroes.

Rudewicz emphasized the vital role dogs play in various operations, underscoring the unmatched capabilities of a dog’s keen sense of smell. He believes that amidst technological advancements, the innate skills of these animals remain unparalleled and have undoubtedly saved numerous lives.

Notably, a portion of the donations was allocated to the Enfield Police Department’s K-9 unit, reflecting the community’s support for their local law enforcement officers and their canine partners. The Enfield Dog Park Action Committee and Enfield Hooah also contributed $400 to the department’s K-9 team to purchase a narcotics safe, ensuring the safety and well-being of these diligent animals.

Officer Chris Dufresne and Officer Brian Croteau, along with their K-9 companions, expressed gratitude for the community’s generosity. While these dogs serve as integral members of the police force, both officers highlighted the importance of acknowledging that these loyal companions are cherished pets outside of their duty hours.

Such initiatives not only highlight the community’s support for law enforcement agencies and service dogs but also shed light on the significant role these animals play in safeguarding communities and serving the greater good. The collaboration between Enfield Hooah, the Enfield Dog Park Action Committee, and the local police department exemplifies the power of collective action in recognizing and honoring these unsung heroes.
