A South Australian vet has recently observed an increase in dog injuries caused by tight-fitting jackets and jumpers during cold weather. Mount Gambier vet Teresa Priddle has treated dogs with wounds from ill-fitting clothing, emphasizing the importance of checking for rub marks and ensuring proper fit.
Dr. Priddle highlighted the need for owners to be vigilant in monitoring their dogs’ attire, suggesting that jackets should not be left on continuously. She recommended daily checks for any signs of discomfort or skin irritation caused by the clothing.
University of Adelaide associate professor Susan Hazel, an expert in animal welfare, expressed concern over the injuries seen by Dr. Priddle, emphasizing that dog clothing should prioritize functionality over fashion. Dr. Hazel suggested using jackets with thicker straps to distribute pressure more evenly on the dog’s skin.
Regarding the necessity of jackets for dogs in winter, Dr. Hazel emphasized that they should serve a practical purpose in keeping dogs warm or dry, rather than being purely ornamental. She recommended providing alternative ways to keep dogs warm, such as providing shelter or blankets.
Owners like Leisa McKinnon and Ian Wheller shared their experiences with dressing their dogs. McKinnon’s French bulldog, Patrick, wears jackets with sleeves or stretchy fabric to prevent overheating or injuries. Wheller’s golden retriever, Otis, dons a denim jacket more for style than necessity, given his breed’s thick coat.
The rise in pet-related merchandise, including dog clothing, has been noted as a growing market. Dr. Hazel cautioned that some products may prioritize style over function, potentially leading to injuries if not designed with animal welfare in mind.
As pet fashion continues to evolve, it is essential for owners to prioritize their pets’ comfort and safety when selecting clothing. Regular monitoring, proper fit, and consideration for the dog’s breed and needs are crucial in ensuring that dogs can enjoy the benefits of wearing attire without risking injury.
